01How to read the list

Ramada, pergola, patio cover

These three words get used interchangeably in sales copy and they describe different objects. Agreeing which one you are buying is the fastest way to make two quotes comparable.

  • Patio cover. Attached to the house, solid roof, full shade. Needs a permit everywhere on this site.
  • Ramada. Free-standing, solid roof, open sides. The one that can fall under the county exemption.
  • Pergola. Open slatted top. Partial shade, no rain protection, cheapest of the three.
  • Awning. Fabric or metal, projecting from a wall. Under 54 inches and self-supporting, no permit.

Planning ranges for the Prescott and Yavapai County market, not quotes. They cover the structure as installed and exclude the permit, which is set by whichever authority has jurisdiction and is not published as a figure on this site.

The rules behind the choice

Permit thresholds and HOA architectural review both narrow the field before cost does.
